The Ria Formosa looks completely different on the return, as the tides reshape it.

A 2h30 dolphin-watching tour from Faro navigates the Ria Formosa Natural Park channels to Cabo de Santa Maria, then sails into the Atlantic to search for dolphins and seabirds. The boat returns through the same channels, but the landscape has shifted with the tide. A professional skipper leads the tour in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French, and life jackets are provided.

The experience

The tour leaves Faro at 8:30 and spends the first 30 minutes crossing the Ria Formosa channels. A network of waterways where you watch for wildlife among the islands. The boat reaches Cabo de Santa Maria, the junction where the channels meet the open ocean, and then heads into the Atlantic for 90 minutes of dolphin watching. The skipper navigates in search of dolphins and other marine species, though sightings are not guaranteed.

The return journey retraces the channels back to Faro over another 30 minutes, but the landscape has transformed. Tides shift the water levels and expose or submerge the banks, so the same route looks entirely different on the way back. Life jackets are worn throughout, and the skipper speaks your language: English, Spanish, Portuguese or French.

Weather can affect departures, and the tour suits all fitness levels. Children from age 5 can join if accompanied by an adult. The boat is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or pregnant travelers.

What’s included

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 9 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What are the chances of seeing dolphins on this tour?

Dolphin sightings are not guaranteed. The tour navigates the Atlantic waters off Faro in search of dolphins and other marine species, but wildlife encounters depend on conditions and animal movement on the day.

How long does the boat spend actually looking for dolphins?

The Atlantic portion lasts 90 minutes. After crossing the Ria Formosa channels for 30 minutes, the boat heads into open water to search for dolphins, then returns through the channels in another 30 minutes.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Tours are subject to weather conditions, so departures may be postponed or cancelled if conditions make it unsafe to sail. Check with the operator about rescheduling options when you book.

Can my five-year-old come on this tour?

Children from age 5 are welcome, provided they are accompanied by an adult throughout the tour. Life jackets are supplied for all passengers.

What's the difference between the outbound and return routes through Ria Formosa?

The boat takes the same channels both ways, but the Ria Formosa's appearance changes dramatically with the tide. Water levels rise and fall, exposing or submerging the banks and islands, so the landscape looks completely different on the return journey.
