You rappel down waterfalls, not just look at them.

Canyoning in Peneda-Gerês National Park is a full-day activity where small groups rappel down waterfalls, slide natural rock formations, jump into freshwater lagoons and swim through river canyons, guided by certified International Canyoning Commission specialists. No experience needed. Children as young as 10 can join if they meet the minimum height of 1.20m. The route takes you through forest paths and hidden sections of the Gerês accessible only by canyon.

The experience

Peneda-Gerês National Park holds waterfalls and rock formations carved over thousands of years, and canyoning is the way to move through them instead of around them. You'll walk forest trails, then rappel down the falls themselves, slide smooth natural rock chutes, and jump into turquoise lagoons. All the jumps are optional, so you control the intensity. The guides are trained by the International Canyoning Commission and speak English, Spanish, Portuguese or French, so language is not a barrier.

A full day means you move deeper into the canyon than a shorter activity would allow, reaching hidden parts of the Gerês forest that have no trail access. You swim through sections where the river has carved the only passage, and the rock slides are the actual streambed polished by water. Small groups cap at ten people, which keeps the pace manageable and the experience personal.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are available if you book that option. Otherwise, you'll arrange your own transport to the meeting point. Bring a sense of adventure and comfort in water: the rest (helmet, guide, snacks and bottled water) is provided. Children need to be at least 1.20m tall and weigh over 20kg. Adults of any fitness level can participate, though the activity is not suitable for people with spinal injuries or pregnant travelers.

Is this one for you?If you're staying in Braga or the Porto region without a car, book the hotel pickup option so you don't need to arrange transport to the canyon entrance yourself. The small group size and full-day format mean you'll move deeper into the park than a shorter activity allows, reaching waterfalls and hidden forest sections that have no walking trail.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

Can I do canyoning in Peneda-Gerês if I've never rappelled before?

No previous experience is needed. The guides teach you how to use the equipment and handle each rappel, and they lead you through the canyon step by step. The activity is designed for first-timers as well as experienced adventurers.

What happens if I don't want to jump into the lagoons?

All jumps are optional and completely avoidable. You can swim, wade or stay on the rocks while others jump, and you'll still experience the full canyon: the rappels, slides and swimming sections are the main event.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the canyon, or is pickup included?

Hotel pickup and drop-off from Braga or the Porto region are available as an optional add-on. Contact the operator for pricing. If you don't book that option, you'll meet the group at the canyon entrance and arrange your own way there.

What is the minimum age for canyoning in Peneda-Gerês?

Children must be at least 10 years old and meet the height requirement of 1.20m (3'11") and weigh over 20kg (44lbs). Families with younger children should contact the operator to discuss alternatives.

How many people will be in my group?

Groups are kept small, with a maximum of 10 people per booking. This keeps the pace steady and gives the guides room to work with each person individually through the more technical sections.

What is Peneda-Gerês National Park like as a canyoning destination?

Peneda-Gerês is one of Portugal's most beautiful natural areas, with waterfalls, river canyons and forest that have been shaped by water over thousands of years. The park holds sections of canyon that are only reachable by water, so canyoning is the only way to access them.
