What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the salty breeze—kind of sharp, but fresh enough to wake you up. Our instructor, João, greeted us right by the van with a big grin and handed out wetsuits that actually fit (not always a given). We were a mixed bunch—kids, teens, a couple from Germany, and me—so he split us into smaller groups based on experience. No one felt left behind or rushed.

Before we even touched the water, João walked us through the basics on the sand. He pointed out how to spot safe currents and what those colored flags mean—stuff you’d never guess just watching surfers from the boardwalk. We practiced paddling and popping up on our boards right there on the beach, getting sandy and laughing at our wobbly first tries.
