What’s included

Your day includes pickup at Lisbon Zoo, round-trip transport to Costa da Caparica or another nearby beach chosen by your local guide based on conditions, certified instruction for any skill level (beginner or advanced), full use of wetsuit and board during your two-hour session, plus sports insurance throughout your time in the water.

I didn’t expect my first real taste of Lisbon to be salty. We met our guide, João, outside the zoo — he grinned and tossed us wetsuits that smelled faintly like sun-warmed neoprene and ocean. The van ride was quick but somehow felt like leaving the city behind completely; you could already smell the sea before we even saw it. João pointed out the cliffs at Costa da Caparica and said something about “fossils older than Portugal itself.” I tried to picture that while clutching my board, feeling both excited and slightly ridiculous in my borrowed suit.

The beach was nearly empty except for a couple of older guys chatting in Portuguese and waxing boards. The Atlantic looked wild but not mean — just restless. João checked the waves (he called them “good for learning today, but not boring”), then walked us through the basics right there on the sand. My first attempt at standing up was more comedy than sport; I wiped out so fast I got sand in my ears. He laughed, showed me again, then gave me this thumbs-up that made me want to try harder. There’s something about being cheered on by someone who knows these waters inside out.

After a while, paddling felt less foreign — arms burning in a good way, saltwater stinging my lips. The wind picked up and you could hear gulls overhead, plus this distant music from someone’s portable speaker further down the beach. At some point I actually caught a wave for a few seconds. It wasn’t graceful but it was real, and João whooped from behind me like I’d won something big. Even now, back in Lisbon with sand still stuck between my toes, I keep thinking about how alive it felt out there — cold water, bright sky, everyone just laughing at their own wipeouts.
