Step-by-step itinerary

Buggy tour of Pico Island vineyards

  • Drive buggy through volcanic trails
  • Explore UNESCO vineyard landscapes
  • Learn about island history and nature
  • Stop at vineyard areas

The experience

You sit behind the wheel of a buggy and navigate Pico's off-road trails yourself, moving through the island's volcanic terrain and the distinctive stone-walled vineyard basins that UNESCO protects. The guide rides along, sharing the story of how the island's geology shaped its wine tradition and pointing out the formations that make Pico's landscape unlike anywhere else in the Azores. The combination of driving and learning means you're not watching the scenery pass. You're moving through it under your own control.

The tour runs three hours and covers both the wild, undeveloped side of the island and the cultivated vineyard areas where the basalt-lined plots catch the Atlantic wind. You'll stop at some of the UNESCO vineyard zones to take in the scale of the landscape and understand why this particular corner of Portugal became a protected site. The buggy itself handles the terrain. You handle the route and the pace.

Helmet, glasses and all safety gear come with the buggy. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the group. Infants must sit on an adult's lap. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns, though it suits all other fitness levels and welcomes riders older than 6 years.
