The experience
The tour starts at St. John the Baptist church on Bogurodzicy Street and follows a route through the medieval core. Your guide takes you to Plac Andersa, a quiet park where locals photograph Jan Czekanowski's Bench, then moves to Victory Square to see the Water Gate fountain and the neo-Gothic Sacred Heart Church. You step inside St Wojciech to see its ornaments, altar and rosetta windows, then walk through the lively Old Town streets toward the Harbour Gate (one of the few surviving 18th-century fortifications), and on to St James Basilica, the tallest church in Pomerania. The route passes the House of Loitz and other noble residences around the market square before ending at Hay Market Square, where the Old Town Hall and colorful gingerbread-style houses mark the heart of the district.
The 3-hour option extends the walk along Piastowski Boulevard to the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle, where you see the medieval astronomical clock on its exterior and the renaissance courtyards inside (the museum remains closed, but the courtyards are accessible). You then walk the Chrobry Embankment to see the Chrobry Fountain and the National Museum building, visit the Cathedral Basilica's interior, climb to its 110-meter tower for panoramic views, and finish at Solidarity Square to see the Royal Gate, Sundial and the Monument to the Victims of December 1970. The Karlowicz Philharmonic, with its translucent ribbed-glass façade, closes the walk. The 2-hour version omits the castle, cathedral interior and embankment section, keeping the focus on the Old Town itself.
Your guide is a licensed professional who speaks your chosen language fluently and provides context on the churches, Pomeranian heritage and how the city's borders and postwar rebuilding shaped what you see. Pickup from accommodations in the Old Town is included. Provide your address when booking so the guide can meet you there. If you're staying outside the Old Town or more than 1.5 km from the starting point, you'll meet at St. John the Baptist church. The tour is wheelchair accessible, and strollers are welcome. Note that guided tours inside churches may be limited during mass or special events, so your guide may provide information from outside instead.
