The experience
You arrive at Manufaktura, the sprawling 19th-century cotton mill complex that Poznański built so large his workers called it "a city within the city." The audio guide explains how the textile magnate's fortune transformed Łódź into the "Polish Manchester," then walks you through what the factory became after: an arts and shopping district that kept the industrial bones of the place. From there the route moves through the city's layered history: the Poznański Palace next door, where the cotton king lived; Plac Wolności, the octagonal plaza laid out in 1823 as the address point zero of Łódź; the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, a Neo-Renaissance building from 1889 that still carries cast-iron galleries from its earlier life as a Lutheran church.
The walk includes smaller, stranger stops that give the city texture. The Rose Passage is a courtyard of shattered mirror shards installed by artist Joanna Rajkowska in 2013 as a reference to her daughter's eye condition and recovery. The Łódź Walk of Fame runs along the pavement as brass stars honoring Polish film industry figures, a nod to the city's "HollyLodz" identity established in 1998. At the end you reach the Julian Tuwim Monument, a bronze bench sculpture of the beloved local poet outside the Juliusz Heinzel Palace. Local tradition says rubbing his nose brings good luck. The audio guide includes quizzes at each stop, turning the walk into a game you can play at your own rhythm.
No app download is required (the guide runs on your smartphone through the browser), and you choose when to start and how long to linger at each stop. The audio is available in English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese. You'll need an internet connection on your phone to access the guide initially, though the walk itself is straightforward to follow on foot through the city center.
