The experience

The driver picks you up from your hotel in central Krakow and the drive to Auschwitz takes roughly an hour and fifteen minutes each way. You travel in a shared air-conditioned minivan with other visitors (maximum 14 people) and an English-speaking driver. A short break of 10–15 minutes happens before the guided tour begins, giving you time to orient yourself before entering the camp.

At Auschwitz, you join an English-language tour led by a museum guide and wear a headset so you hear clearly throughout. The tour covers the museum exhibition, prisoner barracks, the Death Wall, the railway ramp, gas chambers and crematoria, miles of barred wire fence and watchtowers. Much of the camp is unchanged since 1945. After roughly two hours at Auschwitz, transport takes you to Birkenau, the larger killing center, where the guided portion continues for about an hour. The two sites together form the largest Nazi concentration camp complex of World War II. Nearly one and a half million people from 28 countries, almost a million of them Jewish, were murdered here. The camp became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

After the tours conclude, the driver returns you to your hotel or another address in Krakow. Bring a valid ID or passport. Backpacks and bags cannot exceed 30 by 20 by 10 centimeters. The museum is closed on January 1st, the first day of Easter, April 16th and December 25th. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller.
