Step-by-step itinerary

Guided kayak tour of Gdansk canals

  • Pass by The Crane historic site
  • See SS Sołdek coal and ore freighter
  • View active Gdansk Remontowa Shipyard
  • Explore Granary and Olowianka Islands
  • Observe Main City from water perspective
  • Return to launch point

The Experience

I didn’t expect to start my day in Gdansk by squeezing into a spray skirt while laughing nervously with strangers, but here we were — fumbling with waterproof bags and listening to our guide, Ola, explain how not to paddle in circles. The city looked different from the jetty: quieter, like it was waiting for us to drift in. I could smell wet wood and something faintly metallic from the old shipyard nearby. My hands felt clumsy at first, but once we pushed off, the kayak slid out onto the canal smoother than I’d thought.

Paddling past the Crane (Ola called it Żuraw — I tried to say it back and she just grinned), I realized how much history sits right on the water here. She pointed out where dockworkers used to haul cargo centuries ago, and you could almost hear echoes of that life in the creak of ropes or clangs from the working yards. We floated by Granary Island, where sunlight bounced off brick walls and seagulls shouted overhead — honestly, I still think about that view when I see water now. It’s not like walking through Old Town; from the kayak, you spot details no one on land notices.

There was this moment near the shipyard where everything got really quiet except for distant hammering and our paddles dipping in sync. A couple of guys fixing a ferry waved at us — one even yelled something in Polish that made Ola laugh (she never did translate). My arms burned a bit after five kilometers but it felt good, like we’d earned every photo we took. And if you’re worried about your phone getting wet, don’t — they give you lockers and dry bags so you can just focus on not tipping over (which nobody did, thank god).

What’s included

Your day includes use of stable double kayaks with paddles and spray skirts, full safety gear including life jackets, secure lockers for your things, waterproof bags for anything you want to bring along on the water, plus guidance from an experienced local who knows these canals inside out.
