The experience
Bialystok's Old Town centers on a charming market square ringed with picturesque tenement houses and a beautiful Town Hall. A private guide meets you at your accommodation in the Old Town and walks you through the city's layers: the Market Square itself, the St. Roch Basilica (a three-nave Roman Catholic cathedral 90 meters long with two 72.5-meter towers), and the Cathedral Church, built in 1843–1846 in Byzantine style with a distinctive central cupola. The guide speaks English or Polish and shapes the route around what interests you most.
The two options differ in what comes next. The 2-hour version ends at the Grand Synagogue Memorial, which commemorates the synagogue burned by the Nazis with roughly 2,000 Jewish residents inside: a site that anchors the city's complex history. The 3-hour version instead takes you to Branicki Palace and the Griffin Gate. Branicki Palace is the 18th-century complex that earned Bialystok its nickname "Versailles de la Pologne": the palace itself, its gardens, pavilions, sculptures and outbuildings were all built according to French models at the same time the city's churches, town hall and monastery rose around them. Both versions include free admission to the basilica and palace, and the guide offers recommendations for restaurants, patisseries and pubs along the way.
Pickup happens from your accommodation if you're staying in the Old Town. The walking itself stays on accessible surfaces throughout. The tour is wheelchair accessible, and infants can ride in a pram or stroller. You'll receive important details by email the day before.
