The Experience

Someone handed me a headset before we even got out of the car—our driver Marek had already queued up a short documentary about Auschwitz. I didn’t expect to feel nervous just watching it, but by the time we pulled up outside the memorial, I was quiet. The air felt colder than Krakow that morning, even though it was only an hour’s drive. Our guide, Anna, spoke softly and walked us through the gates. There’s this crunch underfoot—gravel mixed with dirt—and every sound seems louder than it should be. At one point, Anna stopped beside a display of battered suitcases and said something about names being erased; I caught myself tracing my thumb over my own bag later.

The tour at Auschwitz-Birkenau lasted hours but moved fast—maybe because there’s so much to take in that you lose track of time. I noticed people from all over: a French couple whispering, a Polish school group ahead of us. It’s hard to describe what it feels like standing on those tracks. Lunch after felt strange (I barely tasted my sandwich), but Marek cracked a joke about Polish pickles and somehow lightened things up for a moment.

Wieliczka Salt Mine is nothing like I imagined—a spiral staircase down forever (400 steps, apparently), then suddenly you’re underground where everything tastes faintly salty, even the air. Our salt mine guide, Piotr, tapped the wall and told us to try it—yes, actually lick the salt! Li from our group did it first; I chickened out but touched my tongue to my finger after. The carvings are wild—chandeliers made from rock salt that catch your flashlight in weird ways. It’s chilly down there (bring a jacket), and you get lost in these echoing tunnels until suddenly you’re back above ground blinking at daylight again.

I keep thinking about Anna’s voice echoing in those empty barracks and then Piotr laughing about “miners’ biceps.” Two places that couldn’t be more different in feeling or story, but somehow they fit together in one long day trip from Krakow. Still not sure how to explain it all to friends back home—you kind of have to go.
