The experience
The drive from Manila takes 10 to 12 hours on day one, with lunch at a local restaurant and two to four stops along the way to break up the mountain road. You arrive in Sagada by evening and stay in a private room at a bed and breakfast. Day two centers on a two to three hour hike through rice paddies to Bomod-Ok waterfall, where swimming is possible but the water runs cold. After lunch in Sagada town, the afternoon opens up: you can visit the hanging coffins, the old church, the burial cave (Lumiang Cave), the pottery workshop and the town itself, or arrange a separate caving experience at Sumaguing Cave if you want spelunking. The easy route runs about three hours and suits beginners.
Day three moves north to Banaue. You stop at the Bontoc Museum first, which holds Igorot artifacts and shows the material culture of the mountain people, then continue by mountain route to the Banaue rice terraces: 2,000-year-old hand-carved terraces that sit roughly 1,500 meters above sea level and cover thousands of square kilometers of mountainside. The terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You visit the viewpoint, then settle into your Banaue accommodation and visit the Cordillera Museum in the afternoon. Day four starts early with breakfast overlooking the terraces, then a private jeepney picks you up at eight for the drive to Batad village. The final fifteen-minute walk down to the village gives the first view of the Batad terraces, another UNESCO site. A local guide takes you through the rice paddies to the highest scenic point, then down to Tappia waterfall for a swim before the hike back to the village. Day five reverses the route: a walk back to the jeepney at Batad, the drive to Banaue by nine, then the full return to Manila, arriving at your hotel around seven in the evening.
The tour runs with a maximum of six travelers in one group, keeping the pace manageable and the guide's attention distributed. An English-speaking guide accompanies you throughout, and all accommodation is private room, not shared. The air-conditioned vehicle handles the long drives and the mountain roads. Meals are not included except where noted in the itinerary (lunch on day one and day two, late lunch on day three), so you'll eat at local restaurants the guide recommends or choose your own. Gratuities for the guide and driver are separate.

Is this one for you?The tour runs in English, so you follow the guide's commentary on the sites, the villages and the history without a language barrier. If you speak English and want the mountains explained as you walk, this works. If you need interpretation into another language, you'd need a different arrangement.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.
How much hiking is involved across the five days?
Day two includes a two to three hour hike to Bomod-Ok waterfall through rice paddies. Day four has a fifteen-minute walk down to Batad village, then a trek through the rice paddies to the highest terraces and down to Tappia waterfall, with a hike back to the village. The full loop takes most of the morning and early afternoon. The other days involve walking around towns and viewpoints but no extended treks.
What's the difference between the Sagada caves and the Sumaguing Cave option?
Lumiang Cave (the burial cave) is part of the standard day two itinerary in Sagada and you walk through it as part of the afternoon's exploration. Sumaguing Cave is a separate caving experience focused on spelunking. The easy route takes about three hours underground and is arranged on request if you want a dedicated cave adventure. It's not included in the base itinerary.
Do I need to arrange anything before the tour starts, or is pickup from my Manila hotel included?
Pickup from your Manila hotel is included. Your driver arrives at 5:30 am on day one. You don't need to arrange transport to the starting point. Bring a valid ID and let the operator know your hotel address when you book.
What are the rice terraces actually like when you stand there?
The Banaue terraces are 2,000 years old, carved by hand into mountainside at roughly 1,500 meters above sea level, and cover thousands of square kilometers. You visit the viewpoint on day three, then walk through the Batad terraces on day four, climbing up to the highest scenic point where you can see the full expanse of paddies. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the scale is visible from the viewpoints and the walking paths.
Is the 10 to 12 hour drive on day one all in one stretch, or are there breaks?
The drive includes lunch at a local restaurant along the way and two to four stops to rest and take photos of the mountain villages and scenery. You arrive in Sagada in the evening around 6:00 pm, so the stops break up the journey but it's still a full day of travel.
What language does the guide speak?
The guide speaks English throughout the tour, so commentary on the sites, the villages and the culture is in English. The guide is trained locally and familiar with all three destinations.
