The Experience

The Lady of Cao sits in her glass case at the El Brujo museum near Trujillo, and she's been staring straight ahead for over 1,500 years—since sometime between the 1st and 8th centuries, when the Moche civilization ruled Peru's north coast. She was probably a ruler, maybe a priestess; the archaeologists still aren't entirely sure. What they know is that she was buried with a war club, a copper scepter, and enough care that her body survived intact until diggers found her a few decades ago. Standing in front of her, you realize how much of what we think we know about the Moche is still being written.

The El Brujo Archaeological Complex itself sits on a stretch of desert outside Trujillo, and it's three temples stacked on top of each other over centuries—each one built higher than the last, each one decorated with friezes so detailed you can still see the pigment. The name "El Brujo" comes from those polychrome walls, the colored designs that cover them. Your guide walks you through the site in an air-conditioned vehicle between the main structures, then on foot through the areas where the Moche buried their dead.
