The Experience

I’ll never forget that first step off the platform at Racchi — my hands were sweating inside the gloves, even though our guide (Luis? Or maybe it was Lucho?) had just double-checked every strap and buckle. We’d driven out from Cusco early, watching the mist peel off the Sacred Valley as we got closer to those wild green hills. The air up there smelled sharp, like eucalyptus and something sweet I couldn’t name. There was this quiet hum from the village below, but mostly just wind and a few distant dogs barking.

Before you get to zip across anything, there’s a bit of trekking — not too hard, but enough to make me realize how thin the air is at these heights. Luis kept making jokes about my “city lungs” while pointing out little patches of potatoes and quinoa growing along the path. When we reached the first cable, he explained how all their gear was certified by Petzl (he seemed proud of that), and then showed us how to clip in. I hesitated for a second before pushing off — honestly, your stomach flips a bit when you look down at those terraces and rivers far below.

The ride itself? It’s fast, louder than I expected with the wind in your ears and that zip sound right next to your helmet. There are four cables in total — each one feels different somehow — plus this wobbly Tibetan bridge that made everyone laugh nervously as we crossed. The guides took photos mid-air; I’m grinning like an idiot in mine. At one point I tried asking about Racchi Ayllu’s history (in very bad Spanish) and Luis just smiled and told me they’ve been here longer than any of us can remember. That stuck with me for some reason.
