The experience
You arrive at the train station and meet your guide, who takes you by tourist bus up to Machupicchu. From there, the walk begins: 2 to 4 hours moving through the terraces, temples and residential sectors of the Inca city. A professional guide who knows the place explains what you're standing in front of: the precision of the stonework, the water channels, why the city sits where it does, how the Inca organized the space. The difference between walking it alone and walking it with someone who understands the engineering is the difference between seeing a ruin and reading one.
Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian, so you get the detail in your language. The tour works for any fitness level, though the site itself has uneven terrain and stairs. Families bring children from age 2 onward. You choose whether you want a private guide for your group or join a shared guide service. The shared option means you're one of several small groups following the same guide, while private means the guide is yours alone.
Some options bundle the entrance ticket and bus. Others require you to buy those separately. Check which version you're booking so you know what's already arranged and what you need to handle before you arrive at the station.

Live guide in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (2 to 11 years).
What happens if it rains?

What's the difference between the private guide and the shared guide service?
A private guide is yours alone for the full 2 to 4 hours. A shared guide leads multiple small groups through the site at the same time. Both are professional guides fluent in your language, and both explain the same ruins. The difference is group size and attention.
Do I need to buy the entrance ticket and bus ticket separately, or are they included?
It depends on which option you choose at checkout. Some options bundle the bus from the station and the entrance ticket. Others are the guide only. Read the option details before you book so you know what you still need to arrange.
How much walking is involved, and is it suitable if I'm not very fit?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You'll be walking on uneven terrain with stairs, and the site sits at high altitude, so pace yourself and let your guide know if you need to slow down or take breaks.
