The Experience

So the first thing that happened in Lima — I walked out of customs and there was this guy in a yellow vest, holding up my name (my last name slightly misspelled, which made me laugh). He waved like he’d known me for years. I’d been nervous about finding my way, but he just grinned and said “Señorita?” and off we went. The air outside the airport had that salty, humid smell you get near the Pacific, mixed with car exhaust and something sweet I still can’t place. It was late but everything felt busy.

Our driver chatted in Spanish — I caught maybe half of it — but he pointed out the Miraflores sign as we passed, and told me not to worry about the flight delay (“Siempre pasa,” he said, which I guess means it happens all the time).
