The experience
The paddle starts after an early breakfast with pickup from your Puno hotel and a short transfer to the kayak dock. Your guide fits you with a personal floatation device, walks you through basic paddling technique, and then you're on the water. The first hour is your own rhythm (no racing, no pressure) as you move through the high plateau where the sky and the lake seem to become one. You'll pass green reed carpets (thicker in the rainy season) and spot native birds in their natural habitat around Lake Titicaca's National Reserve.
After an hour of paddling, you reach Suma Kile, one of the ancestral Uros reed floating islands where a local family lives. Your guide explains the islands' origin and history, and more importantly, how they're actually built, no guessing required. You spend about an hour on the island before paddling back to the dock, where a transfer takes you to your hotel by 12:30 pm.
