The experience
You ride on Peruvian Paso horses, a breed known for their smooth, ground-covering gait that makes long hours in the saddle comfortable instead of punishing. The route crosses working farmland (sugarcane, corn and rice fields) before entering Pomac Forest, a 5,887-hectare sanctuary created to protect both the forest ecosystem and the archaeological sites buried within it. The forest itself is habitat for dozens of bird species, many found nowhere else, and holds an enormous carob tree over 400 years old with a shape so twisted it stops riders mid-trail.
The destination is the Sicán archaeological complex, where 36 pyramids from the pre-Inca Lambayeque culture rise from the forest floor. This is where the tomb of the Lord of Sicán was discovered: a burial so lavish it contained gold artifacts and the ceremonial knives called Tumi that made the site famous. You ride to the complex itself and walk the pyramids. The guide explains what you're standing in front of and why it matters. Pickup from your hotel is included, as is entrance to Pomac Forest.
