Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Cusco nightlife bar and club tour

  • Start tour with city view
  • Visit first bar stop
  • Finish tour at final venue

We ducked out onto one of those narrow Cusco streets just as the city lights started to flicker on—there’s this moment when you feel the air shift, like everyone’s waking up for the night. Our guide, Diego (who knows literally everyone), waved us over to the first bar. It was louder than I expected but in a good way—people shouting greetings in Spanish and English, glasses clinking somewhere behind me. The welcome drink was sweet and sharp at the same time; I’m still not sure what was in it but it definitely worked as an ice-breaker. We played some game where you had to remember names—my brain blanked after two people but nobody cared.

After that we zigzagged through alleys I’d never find again without help. Each stop had its own vibe: at one place a bartender handed me a local beer and winked when I tried to pronounce “Cusqueña” (I probably butchered it). There was this smell of grilled meat drifting in from outside—someone said you could get discounts on snacks if you showed your wristband. At another bar, Diego introduced us to a couple of locals who taught us a simple salsa step right by the bar stools. I stepped on someone’s foot (sorry again) but they just laughed and spun me around anyway.

The last club was packed by midnight but we walked straight past the line—felt weirdly VIP for someone who usually gets stuck waiting outside. The bass thumped so hard you could feel it in your chest, and for a second I just stood there watching everyone dance under these blue lights that made everything look electric. I didn’t expect to feel so comfortable so quickly; maybe it was the mix of travelers and locals or maybe just knowing Diego had our backs all night. Either way, I still think about that view from the first rooftop bar—the city glowing below us—and how different Cusco feels after dark.
