The experience
You start with pickup from your hotel or a meeting point in central Ica at 6:30 a.m. The drive heads into the Ocucaje desert, where the Canyon of the Lost opens up: a geological formation 150 meters deep and 1.5 kilometers long, sculpted by millions of years of erosion from the Dry River. A light hike takes you down into the canyon itself. Your guide points out marine fossils embedded in the rock, saltpeter deposits, and the layered formations that make up the walls. The desert landscape around it is stark and remote. This is not a crowded attraction.
On the way back to Ica around midday, you stop at an artisan winery in the Ocucaje Valley. Here you taste pisco and wines made using traditional methods: the kind of small-scale production that defines the region. If you want to take a bottle home, you can buy one. By 3 p.m. you're back at the Plaza de Armas in Ica, leaving the afternoon free.
