The Experience

The trip starts with hotel pickup in Cusco the night before, then an overnight bus to Puerto Maldonado, arriving at 6:30am. A guide meets you at the station, stores excess luggage, and takes you by motorboat 40 minutes upriver to Amazon Garden Lodge on the Madre de Dios River. After a welcome drink, you explore jungle trails and search for caiman that night.

Day 2 centers on Sandoval Lake. After breakfast, you walk 90 minutes through rainforest—past ancient trees and tangled vines—to reach the lake, where you spend hours paddling in a canoe to spot giant otters, turtles, colorful birds and butterflies. The lodge provides lunch and snacks. Day 3 takes you downriver to visit two families from the Ese'eja indigenous community on Gamitana Island, where they share their language, customs, clothing and traditional ways. You also fish in the river and walk the jungle at night again, hunting for insects and snakes with a flashlight.

On Day 4, you wake early to watch parrots and parakeets gather at the clay lick—they come at dawn to eat mineral-rich clay that neutralizes toxins from the seeds and fruits they feed on. Breakfast follows, then the morning bus back to Cusco, arriving around 9pm. The guide speaks English or Spanish; all meals at the lodge are included, though dinner on Night 1 and lunch on Day 4 depend on which option you book.

Top questions

What animals will I see on the 4-day Tambopata tour?

Giant otters, caimans, turtles, river dolphins, macaws and parakeets, and hundreds of bird species inhabit Sandoval Lake and the Madre de Dios River. The clay lick on Day 4 draws parrots and parakeets at dawn to feed on mineral-rich soil. Night jungle walks may turn up insects and snakes, though sightings depend on the season and time of day.

How much walking is involved in the 4 days?

Day 2 includes a 90-minute walk through rainforest to reach Sandoval Lake. Night jungle trails on Days 1 and 3 are shorter explorations. Day 4 is mostly boat travel and the clay lick viewing, with minimal walking. Trails are muddy and uneven, so hiking boots and good fitness help.

What's included in the tour price?

The tour includes round-trip overnight bus from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, 3 nights in a jungle lodge bungalow, all meals at the lodge, motorboat transport on the Madre de Dios River, entry to Tambopata National Reserve, and a professional guide in English or Spanish. Dinner on Night 1 and lunch on Day 4 vary by option.

Do I need vaccinations or special gear for the jungle?

Yellow fever and tetanus vaccinations are recommended and a copy should be brought. Essential gear includes binoculars, a flashlight with spare batteries, long pants and long-sleeved shirts, hiking boots, rain gear, insect repellent with at least 60% DEET, and a hat and sunscreen. Rubber boots are provided in the rainy season.

What time does the tour start and end?

Hotel pickup in Cusco happens the evening before Day 1, with the overnight bus departing at 8:30pm. The bus arrives in Puerto Maldonado at 6:30am on Day 1. On Day 4, the return bus leaves Puerto Maldonado between 9:30am and 10:00am, arriving in Cusco around 9pm.
