The experience

The tour starts with a drive to Burkat Almouz Village, where you walk around the date farms and banana plantations to learn about the Falaj: the UNESCO World Heritage irrigation canals that have fed this oasis for centuries. A local guide explains how the system works and what grows here, moving at a pace that lets you take in both the engineering and the landscape. The air-conditioned vehicle waits between stops, so you're not managing transport logistics yourself.

From there, the route climbs to Aljabal Alakhdar, which means "the green mountain" in Arabic. At the summit, the temperature and vegetation shift noticeably: pomegranate, olive and rose orchards thrive here because the climate resembles the Mediterranean more than the rest of the Arabian peninsula. The cold atmosphere and the altitude create a sensational contrast to the lower desert. You walk through the old villages of Souqarah and the canyon, seeing how communities adapted farming to this specific microclimate. The whole experience takes about seven hours from pickup to return.

Snacks are provided during the day. Bring water and wear layers, as the mountain temperature is cooler than the villages below. The guide speaks English or Arabic, and pickup from your Nizwa accommodation is included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How cold is Aljabal Alakhdar compared to the rest of Oman?

Aljabal Alakhdar's climate is similar to the Mediterranean, which makes it noticeably cooler than the surrounding Arabian peninsula. That cooler temperature is what allows pomegranate, olive and rose orchards to grow at the summit, something you won't see in the lower villages.
