The experience

The Stella Oceana is built for the Arctic: a spacious expedition yacht with room to move between the outdoor decks and a heated interior, so you're never stuck in one place or one temperature. The Captain and crew are local to Tromsø and know the fjords well enough to adjust the route on the day itself. If the weather favors one arm of the fjords over another, or if wildlife appears in an unexpected spot, the boat goes there. Over the five hours, you watch the mountains and waterfalls that line the coast, and the wildlife sightings (seals, porpoises, eagles, seabirds) happen when they happen. The operator does not guarantee them, but the boat is positioned to find them.

Halfway through, you move inside to the warm saloon for Norwegian fish soup with bread, hot drinks and cookies. The saloon is shoeless. You leave outdoor gear at the door and sit in the warmth. If you've booked the Cruise + Hot Tub option, you get reserved private time in a hot tub on the boat after the sail, with access to a changing room, shower and hair dryer. A polar plunge is possible when conditions allow. The regular cruise ends with a return to central Tromsø harbor after approximately five hours.

The boat runs in English, Norwegian and Japanese, with a live guide throughout. Binoculars, blankets, pillows and books are onboard if you want them. Public transport reaches the departure point, and the cruise suits all fitness levels. The yacht does the moving, not you.
