The Experience

“You’ll want to see this,” our driver-guide said, pulling over just as the clouds started breaking up above the valley. I’d barely finished my coffee from the last stop — honestly, Norwegian gas station pastries are better than they have any right to be — and suddenly we were standing in cold morning air, looking down at a river that looked almost fake, it was so clear. The drive out of Oslo is long but not boring; you keep thinking you’re about to get used to the landscape, but then it changes again. Mountains flatten into plateaus, then drop off into canyons with waterfalls you can hear before you see them.

I didn’t expect the Flam Railway to feel so…old-fashioned? Not in a bad way. The seats creaked a little and there was this faint smell of wood and metal that reminded me of something from childhood. Our guide pointed out tiny villages tucked between cliffs — I tried pronouncing “Aurlandsvangen” and got a laugh from an older couple nearby (they were from Bergen; apparently I sounded Swedish). The train windows fogged up every time we went through a tunnel, so everyone wiped little circles to peek out at the green valleys. At Myrdal station, it felt like we’d landed on another planet — just quiet mountains and that sharp, piney air.

The fjord cruise part — Gudvangen to Flam — was quieter than I thought it would be. No loudspeakers or cheesy music. Just the hum of the boat and people whispering when we passed close under those sheer rock faces. Lunch was quick (open-faced sandwiches, nothing fancy) but sitting outside with wind on my face made even plain cheese taste better somehow. I kept thinking about how small everything looked from down on the water; even big houses seemed like toys against those cliffs.

Geilo surprised me too — more colorful than I expected for a mountain town. Kids running around in ski jackets even though it wasn’t that cold yet. Our driver met us there for the last stretch back to Oslo; by then everyone was tired but nobody really wanted to nap. There’s this feeling after seeing so much in one day that makes your brain kind of buzz quietly all evening. I still think about that first view over the river — maybe because it felt both ordinary and huge at once.
