The experience

You'll meet your guide in central Ålesund and ride a public bus to Hessa island, the same route locals use, before the trail begins. The ascent follows varied terrain through wooded areas and stretches of open rock, with views widening as you climb. The path is straightforward: up the same way you came down, with time at the summit to photograph and absorb the landscape before retracing your steps and taking the bus back to town.

At the top of Sukkertoppen, 314 meters above sea level, the view opens in all directions. You see Ålesund's harbor and the archipelago spread below, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Sunnmøre Alps inland. The guide will be there to point out what lies where and answer questions while you stand and take it in. The mountain experienced a large fire in March 2026. The current state is visible in photographs from September 2026 onward, so the landscape you encounter may differ from older images.
