The experience

How do you see Norway's western fjords and waterfalls without renting a car or joining a coach full of people? This tour departs from the cruise ship dock on Risøy island and heads straight into the landscape. The guide points out Haugesund's landmarks as you drive through the city, then the route climbs inland toward the Stordal valley. After roughly an hour and fifteen minutes, you stop at the lake itself for a toilet break, then climb higher for a panoramic view down across Stordalvatnet before pushing on to Langfoss.

Langfoss is the centerpiece: you get about thirty minutes to walk close to the waterfall and photograph it from the valley floor, then the van climbs again for a second vantage point looking down at both the falls and the Åkrafjord beyond. The electric van is smaller than a coach, which is why the itinerary reaches these higher viewpoints and narrower side valleys at all. On the return, you stop at Åkrafjordtunet, a local café with a shop selling goat cheese, brown cheese and other regional specialties, then climb to a photo stop overlooking the Etnefjord from high above. The route then passes the Rising Tide sculpture park (a set of sculptures placed in the sea near Kvalsvik), and arrives at Haraldshaugen, the national monument erected in 1872 to mark a thousand years since King Harald Fairhair unified Norway after the Battle of Hafrsfjord.

The return to the ship includes a final drive past Haugesund's old post office, Wrangell Villa, and Our Saviour's Church. If time allows and you want to explore the city center on your own, you can ask to be dropped off in town instead of heading straight back to the dock.
