The Experience

You hear the gulls before you see the water — that sharp, laughing sound cutting through Haugesund’s streets. My hands were still figuring out the e-bike when our guide, Tor, waved us over to the Fishermen statue. He told us how the town grew from herring and hard weather. The air smelled a bit salty, or maybe that was just my gloves after gripping the handlebars too tight. I didn’t expect to feel so awake so early.

We zigzagged past painted houses and stopped at Harald Fairhair’s statue. I tried to pronounce his name right (Harald Hårfagre) — Tor grinned but didn’t correct me. The National Monument was up a hill that felt steeper than it looked (thank you, electric motor), and there was this thousand-year-old stone cross just standing there like it had all the time in the world. The wind picked up and someone’s scarf blew away for a second — made us laugh, broke the silence.

The highlight for me was riding along the coast toward those horse sculptures — “The Rising Tides.” They’re massive and strange, half in water, half out, looking like they might walk off into the sea if you blinked. Tor explained how they’d come from London in 2019; I’d never heard of Jason deCaires Taylor before but now I keep thinking about those horses whenever I see driftwood or wet sand. On the way back we rode close to the North Sea, islands scattered in misty light. It felt quiet but alive somehow — hard to explain unless you’ve done it.
