- Pass and listen to stories of The Seven Sisters waterfall
- View and photograph The Suitor waterfall
- See abandoned Skageflå mountain farm
The experience
The boat leaves from the center of Geiranger village and heads into the fjord on a fixed route that brings you close enough to photograph three major waterfalls. The Seven Sisters cascades in seven streams down the cliff face. The Suitor, directly across the fjord, splits at the center to reveal a rock formation that gives it its name. Both are powerful enough that you'll hear them over the engine as the boat slows to let you frame shots and listen to the audio guide explain how people once lived in this landscape.
Skageflå, an abandoned mountain farm perched on the cliff above the water, is the puzzle nobody can quite solve. The audio guide walks you through how residents managed to build houses on terrain that looks impossible to reach, let alone farm. The fjord walls themselves (steep, dark stone rising straight from the water) shift constantly as you move through the channel, and the light changes the color of the cliffs and the water throughout the cruise.
You control the audio guide on your phone before boarding, choosing from English, Spanish, Italian, French or seven other languages. The boat is wheelchair accessible, and infants can travel in a pram or stroller. Public transportation stops are nearby if you're arriving without a car.
