The experience
The class starts at the Stavanger tourist information center, where you board a 12-meter fishing boat and head out along the shoreline. After a safety briefing, you'll spend about two and a half hours fishing with guidance on technique and local waters. The boat carries a full kitchen and toilet, so everything you need is onboard. As you fish, you'll also learn to spot and pick seaweed, small shrimp, and other ingredients that add flavor and variety to what you cook later.
Once you've caught enough, the boat anchors and the real work begins: you and your fellow adventurers prepare the day's catch together. What you cook depends on what you've landed (boiled crabs, fish soup, barbecued mackerel fillets), so every class is different. You'll learn how to turn raw fish into a proper meal, working in the boat's kitchen with guidance on seasoning, cooking methods and local food traditions. Local history and culture weave through the whole experience, not just the fishing part.
The class wraps with waffles, coffee, tea and local apple juice. All clothing, boots, hats and raingear are available onboard if you need them. Just show up and the guide will make sure you're equipped. The boat departs from outside the tourist information center in Stavanger.
