Jump, climb and swim your way down a granite canyon

Canyoning in Valldal is a 3.5-hour activity where you move through a canyon using via-ferrata, rope bridges, cliff jumps and a zipline, with water from Reinheimen National Park running between vertical granite walls. The course starts at the operator's office with gear fitting and transport to the canyon, approximately 15 kilometers from downtown Valldal toward Trollstigen. A professional guide leads the group through obstacles in sequence, and you'll need at least moderate fitness and a minimum age of 13.

The experience

What makes this different from a hike is that you're moving through the canyon itself, not around it. The course starts with a via-ferrata climb along the rock face, then crosses a rope bridge stretched across to the other side. From there you continue deeper into the canyon with another via-ferrata section and a balance bridge before your first jump: a 3-meter drop into the river below. After a swim in the cold water, you climb back up and move through more jumping, swimming, climbing and ziplining before the final challenge: swimming through a white water rapid at the canyon's end.

You start at the office, where your guide fits you with a wetsuit, shoes, helmet and life jacket, then drives you to the canyon entrance. The whole activity runs 3.5 hours. The water comes from Reinheimen National Park and stays cold year-round, so the wetsuit is essential. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Norwegian and stays with the group throughout, managing the pace and the sequence of obstacles so you move safely from one challenge to the next.

Transport from the office to the canyon is included, and you return the same way. Bring a towel and dry clothes for after. There's no lunch included, so eat before you arrive or plan to grab something in Valldal afterward.

What’s included

  • Professional guide in English, Spanish or Norwegian.
  • private transport from the office to the canyon and back.
  • wetsuit, shoes, helmet and life jacket for each participant.

Is this one for you?The course demands continuous movement through water and on rock for 3.5 hours, so it suits travelers who are comfortable swimming in cold water and climbing on wet surfaces. If you prefer a slower pace or want to avoid sustained physical effort, a guided hike through the same region would be a better fit.
