Paddle quietly upriver and watch beavers in their habitat from a stand up board

A stand up paddleboard activity on Vestfosselva river in Hokksund where you paddle in small groups of up to four boards to observe beavers and other wildlife in their natural setting. The river is shallow and calm, and you'll see goats, ducks, foxes, birds and highland cattle along the way. Beginners get instruction at the start, and the trip runs about two hours, timed for late afternoon or evening when beavers are most active.

The experience

The paddle starts at Eiker Padleklubb on Vestfosselva, a shallow river where the water is clear enough to see details below the surface except at the very start. You'll paddle upstream in a group of no more than four boards, moving slowly and quietly: sound scares beavers away, and silence is what makes the sighting possible. The beaver hears well but sees poorly, so a splash of the paddle is enough to send one diving. If you've never stood on a SUP board, the guide gives instruction before you leave the shore.

The trip usually starts in late afternoon or early evening during summer, timed so you're paddling when beavers are most active and the light is still good. In winter and early spring, departure shifts to around 3pm. You'll move at a pace that lets you watch the water and listen for movement in the trees. Along the way you may spot goats, ducks, foxes, birds and highland cattle grazing on the banks. The river is calm except after heavy rain, and the forest around you stays quiet: that peace is part of what you're paying for.

Two people can share one board if needed, though the operator recommends each adult has their own. Children sit on a parent's board, and kids from age three are welcome. You get a life vest and bottled water. Bring a towel and clothes you don't mind getting wet.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Norwegian.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (3 to 12 years). Children under 3 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What time of day do you paddle to see beavers?

The trip starts in late afternoon or early evening during summer months, when beavers are most active and daylight lasts long enough. In winter and early spring, departure is around 3pm. The exact time depends on when it gets dark and on beaver activity that day.

Do I need experience on a stand up paddleboard?

No. If you're new to SUP, the guide gives instruction at the start of the trip before you paddle away from shore. The river is calm and shallow, and the pace is slow enough to focus on watching for wildlife rather than paddling technique.

What animals might I see besides beavers?

Goats, ducks, foxes, birds and highland cattle live along the river and banks. The beaver is the main target, but the paddle upriver passes through their habitat, so other wildlife is common.

How many people paddle together on this trip?

Groups stay small, with a maximum of four stand up paddleboards per trip. Two people can share one board if needed, though adults are recommended to have their own board so they can paddle and watch independently.

What's included in the activity?

The SUP board, life vest and bottled water are provided. Instruction is included if you're new to paddleboarding. You'll need to bring a towel and wear or bring clothes you don't mind getting wet.
