The experience
The route starts at Ålesund on the Atlantic coast and follows the fjords inland toward Geiranger village, paddling through water that narrows and deepens as the landscape transforms around you. Each day you paddle at a normal pace through calm and windier stretches, then camp on an island at night. The guide leads the expedition and handles the logistics. You bring only your sleeping bag. Meals start with lunch on day one and end with lunch on day six, so you eat together as a group throughout.
The kayaks come as singles or doubles, and all equipment (paddles, paddle vests, waterproof bags) is provided. You'll need to be able to lift a fully packed kayak in and out of the water on rocky and slippery landings, and to swim. The group stays small and international, which means the porpoises, eagles and waterfalls you encounter become shared moments rather than solo ones. The daily rhythm of paddling, camping and cooking together brings you back to a pace most people have left behind.
An experienced Norway Adventures guide leads throughout in English. Public transportation options are available to reach Ålesund at the start and to leave from Geiranger at the end, so you arrange your own travel to and from Norway and to the starting point. The trip is physically demanding (you need a high level of fitness and the ability to paddle in variable conditions), but it does not require technical kayaking skill, only the willingness to show up and paddle.

Top questions
What is the Seven Sisters waterfall and when do we paddle past it?
The Seven Sisters is a massive waterfall in the Geirangerfjord that you'll see up close from your kayak as you paddle deeper into the fjords on the route toward Geiranger village. The exact day depends on the group's pace and conditions, but it appears as the landscape opens up in the later part of the expedition.
Do I need kayaking experience to join this trip?
No kayaking experience is required. You need to be able to paddle in calm and windy conditions at a normal pace, to swim, and to be strong enough to lift a fully packed kayak in and out of the water on rocky landings. The guide leads the expedition and teaches what you need to know as you go.
What do I need to bring and what is provided?
Bring only your own sleeping bag. The operator provides all kayak equipment (single or double kayaks, paddles, paddle vests, waterproof luggage bags), all camping gear, and all meals from lunch on day one through lunch on day six. You'll camp on islands each night and cook together as a group.
How physically demanding is this trip?
You need a high level of physical fitness. You'll paddle for multiple hours each day in calm and windy conditions, lift fully packed kayaks in and out of the water on rocky and slippery landings, and camp outdoors for five nights. The trip is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy, and all participants must be able to swim.
What happens if the weather or conditions change during the trip?
The expedition is set up so the group works together to adapt to conditions. The guide makes decisions about pace and route based on wind, water and weather. In rare cases of dramatic change, there may be unexpected additional costs, but the guide will communicate this if it arises.
