The experience
Falls Road is where the tour begins, at the Welcome Wall in the heart of West Belfast's Republican area. Your guide uses local knowledge and photographs from the 1970s onward to connect the murals you see to the events that happened on those exact streets over fifty years ago. The largest outdoor gallery of politically charged art in Western Europe covers this stretch: murals of the ten hunger strikers who died in 1981, including Bobby Sands, sit alongside newer additions like George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as images of Nelson Mandela and international conflicts.
The Peace Wall itself is a series of barriers up to 25 feet high, built to separate predominantly Catholic Republican neighbourhoods from Protestant Loyalist ones. The largest section is where you'll find the signatures of Bill Clinton and the Dalai Lama, and you can add your own name and message. From there the tour moves to Shankill, the heartland of Ulster Loyalism, where you see murals of armed paramilitaries, flags, and the Bayardo Bar Memorial. Your guide explains the role Loyalists played during the Troubles and the symbolism of King Billy, the bonfires and the House of Orange that define this community's identity.
The tour also includes stops at the Irish Republican Memorial Garden and the IRA D Company Garden of Remembrance on Falls Road, as well as the office of Sinn Féin at the Bobby Sands Mural. A local professional driver operates the black taxi, and groups stay under 18 people per booking. Hotel or Airbnb pickup and drop-off are included if you request them when booking.

Top questions
What are the Belfast murals and why are they politically important?
The murals across Falls Road and Shankill were painted by ex-prisoners from both Catholic and Protestant communities and tell stories of conflict, civil rights, prison protests and community strife from the Troubles. They mark the 854-year Republican struggle for Irish freedom on one side and the Loyalist and Unionist identity on the other, making them a visual record of the city's divided history.
What is the Belfast Peace Wall and why was it built?
The Peace Wall is a series of separation barriers, up to 25 feet high and over three miles long in places, built to minimize inter-communal violence between Catholic nationalist and Protestant unionist neighbourhoods. Some gates are staffed by police and close at night. The largest section features signatures from Bill Clinton and the Dalai Lama, and visitors can leave their own messages.
What happens on Shankill Road during the tour?
Shankill is the heartland of Ulster Loyalism, and your guide explains the Loyalist role during the Troubles while you see murals of armed paramilitaries, Stevie "Top Gun", flags, and the Bayardo Bar Memorial, which marks a site of violence during the conflict.
How do I get picked up, and what time does the tour start?
Hotel or Airbnb pickup is included if you request it when booking. You'll need to state your pickup point and preferred time. Tour departures run at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm, and the tour lasts 1.5 to 2 hours.
