Panoramic boat tour of Ohrid Old Town

  • View Saint John at Kaneo Church
  • Pass archaeological site Plaošnik
  • Observe Ohrid Fortress

The experience

The boat leaves from Lake Ohrid's shore and circles the old town, letting you see the medieval churches and fortifications without climbing the steep streets above. Your guide speaks English throughout, pointing out the landmarks and explaining their history as you pass them. The Church of Saint Sophia dominates the waterfront: its 11th-century reconstruction still shows the frescoes that were hidden under lime plaster during the Ottoman occupation, then revealed again after World War II. St John Church sits on a cliff directly above Kaneo Beach, built sometime before 1447 and restored in 1964, when workers discovered frescoes in its dome.

The route also passes the Church of Saint Clement at Plaošnik, an archaeological site 250 meters below Samuil's Fortress where excavators found nearly 2,400 Venetian coins in 2007: evidence that Ohrid and Venice were trading partners centuries ago. You'll see the Caves of Love carved into the rocks and the Presidential Villas along the shoreline. Lake Ohrid itself is one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, straddling the border between North Macedonia and Albania, and home to more than 200 species found nowhere else on earth.

Bottled water comes with the ticket. The tour runs one hour, and you'll need to be comfortable sitting on a boat. Infants travel on an adult's lap. Wear sunscreen and bring a hat if the sun is strong, since there's little shade on the water.

What is the Church of Saint Sophia and why does it look different from other churches in Ohrid?

The Church of Saint Sophia is one of Macedonia's most important medieval monuments, built in the 11th century on the site of an earlier structure. When the Ottomans occupied the city in the 15th century, they converted it into a mosque, covered all the frescoes with lime plaster, flattened the dome, and added minarets. After World War II, restoration work uncovered the frescoes again, so you see both the original medieval art and the marks of its Ottoman-era transformation.

Can I see St John Church clearly from the boat, or is it too far away?

St John Church sits on a cliff directly above Kaneo Beach, so the boat passes close enough to see it well. The church is dedicated to John of Patmos, the writer of Revelation, and was likely built in the 13th century, though the exact date is unknown. Restoration work in 1964 revealed frescoes inside the dome.

How long is the tour and what's included in the price?

Is this tour safe for someone who gets motion sickness or has back problems?

The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, but it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries. If you're prone to motion sickness, Lake Ohrid is generally calm, though conditions vary by season and weather.
