The experience
The day starts with a drive to Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcanic crater rising 605 meters above sea level near Curepipe. From the rim, you get 360-degree views across the central plateau, surrounding mountains and on clear days to the distant coastlines. The crater itself measures roughly 350 meters across and 80 meters deep, ringed by lush vegetation and pine trees. From there the route moves through the highlands to Mare aux Vacoas, the island's largest freshwater reservoir, then to Grand Bassin: a sacred lake in an extinct volcanic crater where a Hindu temple sits beside the water.
The horseback riding happens at Bel Ombre on the south coast, where you ride for one hour along the beach with the turquoise lagoon on one side and the ocean beyond. The salty breeze and the contrast of white sand against blue water frame the ride. Before that, you stop at Alexandra Falls, a waterfall 700 meters above sea level with a wooden platform for the full panoramic view of the south-east coast, and at the Gorges viewpoint between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls: a 3 to 5 minute walk from the road that overlooks the Black River Gorges National Park and its deep valleys and rainforest.
Lunch is a Mauritian meal at a local restaurant where you choose between vegetarian and non-vegetarian options and the chef explains the dishes. The tour ends at Chamarel Viewpoint on the west coast, where you look out toward Le Morne Mountain, the Indian Ocean, and the islets of Île aux Bénitiers and Crystal Rock. A qualified guide drives the fully air-conditioned vehicle throughout, and bottled water arrives with you at pickup.
