The experience
The day starts with a drive from Managua toward León, passing the Piedra Azules Viewpoint where you see Momotombo Volcano and Lake Xolotlán, then through Nagarote before arriving in the city. Once there, you head to the central square to enter the Cathedral of León, the largest in Central America, and climb to the roof for views across the entire city, then walk the central park to learn about local life and culture.
After the city exploration, you travel by 4x4 truck to Cerro Negro, one of Nicaragua's youngest and most active volcanoes. Your guide teaches you how to use the sandboard, control your speed and brake before you climb to the summit. Once at the top, you put on a special suit and goggles, then slide down the volcanic slope at your own pace. The guides provide fruit to rehydrate after the descent.
Private transportation, bottled water, the volcano entrance fee, sandboard, special suit and an air-conditioned vehicle are included. A local guide who speaks English or Spanish accompanies the group throughout. The combination of physical activity on the volcano and walking through León's historic streets means you should have at least a moderate level of fitness. The day is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or who are pregnant.
