Summary

Glowworms overhead, geysers in Rotorua, stories on the road

You’ll ride from Auckland through lush Waikato farmland to explore Waitomo Glowworm Caves by boat, then wander Rotorua’s bubbling geothermal pools at Te Puia with Māori guides sharing family stories. See Lake Rotorua and taste manuka honey before heading home—expect laughter, new friends, and moments that stick with you long after.

experience

What’s the experience like?

You step off the curb in Auckland and there’s this sleepy hush — city sounds fading as our small group piles into the van. Our guide, Matt (who grew up near Hamilton), starts pointing out things I’d never have noticed: a hillside cemetery tucked behind farmland, cows that apparently have “more personality than you’d think.” The drive south is all rolling green and sudden mist. We stop for coffee in a town so quiet you can hear the milk frother hissing from outside. I still remember the smell of wet grass when we got out — it clings to your shoes.

I didn’t really know what to expect from the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Inside, it’s cool and damp; you can feel the air shift as you go deeper. There’s this moment where we board a little boat and drift under thousands of blue pinpricks — everyone goes quiet except for someone’s phone buzzing (Matt gave them a look). No photos allowed, which honestly made it better. You just sit there and let your eyes adjust to the dark, listening to water drip somewhere far off. It felt like being inside someone else’s dream.

After lunch (snacks are simple but hit the spot), we headed for Rotorua and Te Puia. The air smells faintly of sulfur before you even see steam rising over the trees. Our guide at Te Puia, Mereana, told stories about her grandfather carving wood at the National Māori Arts School — she showed us how to say “Pōhutu” properly (I tried; she laughed). The geyser erupts with this sudden roar that makes everyone jump back, even if you know it’s coming. We peeked into the Kiwi bird house — they’re shyer than I thought.

On the way back north, Matt played old Split Enz songs and pointed out places he used to swim as a kid. There was one last stop for manuka honey tasting — sweet but earthy somehow. By then everyone was tired in that good way where nobody talks much but you feel like you’ve shared something weirdly special together.
