Summary

Soaring above Tauranga’s coast then freefalling into wild blue with local crew guiding every step

You’ll start with a scenic flight over Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty before leaping out at 15,000 feet with your local guide strapped in behind you. Feel the rush of freefalling at 200km/h, then drift gently under canopy as you take in wild coastal views—a memory that sticks long after you land.

experience

What’s the experience like?

Ever wondered what the Bay of Plenty looks like from way up—like, way up? I didn’t really know what to expect when we pulled up in Tauranga for this tandem skydive. The team greeted us with these big grins and a kind of relaxed confidence that made me feel less jittery (well, almost). There was this faint smell of sunscreen and grass in the air, and someone’s playlist drifting out from the hangar. Our guide, Jamie, ran through the safety stuff without making it feel like school—he even joked about his own first jump. I think that helped me breathe a bit easier.

The plane ride itself turned out to be its own little adventure. We climbed slowly over the coastline—the Mount looking tiny below us, golden beaches stretching forever. Jamie pointed out White Island off in the haze and named all these peaks: Ruapehu, Taranaki... I tried to spot them but honestly my hands were sweating too much to focus. It was quieter than I expected up there, except for the engine hum and one guy nervously laughing behind me. At some point I realized I could see Rotorua’s lakes glinting far off—felt unreal.

Then suddenly we were at 15,000 feet and it was time. The door opened and cold air hit my face so sharp it woke me right up. Jamie gave me this quick thumbs-up—I think I nodded?—and then we just tipped forward into nothing. That first drop is impossible to describe; wind everywhere, stomach somewhere near my throat, Tauranga spinning below like a map. For those seconds you’re just... falling but also not thinking at all. When the canopy opened at 5,000 feet everything slowed down—my ears popped and suddenly there was this huge silence except for our voices shouting over it all. The view from under the parachute is something I still think about when I'm stuck in traffic back home.
