The experience

The boat departs from Zaanse Schans' main dock and moves into open water where the windmills come into full view. These structures (sawmills, oil mills, spice mills) once drove the Dutch economy, and from the boat you see their scale and the wooden detail the land-based paths don't offer. Your guide walks through what each one did and why they mattered to the region's trade. The relaxed pace on the water lets you absorb the stories without rushing between stops.

After the windmills, the route follows the River Zaan toward Wormerveer, passing traditional Dutch houses along the banks. The guide continues with the history of these homes and the role they played in daily life during the Golden Age. As you approach Wormerveer itself, the boat slows past the old warehouses and factory buildings that line the waterfront: the physical evidence of the town's industrial past. If conditions align, you may catch the scent of roasted cacao from the factories still operating there. The boat then turns back toward Zaanse Schans, completing the loop at the dock where you started.
