The experience
You pick up a fully charged Renault Twizy (a lightweight, open two-seater that turns heads on the road), and follow a GPS-plotted route through South Holland's countryside. The audio guide, available in English, German or Dutch, explains what you're seeing at each stop: a medieval castle, a 17th-century manor, an 18th-century estate, and the grounds surrounding Keukenhof. The route itself is the draw. It threads through the famous flower bulb region on country roads where a regular car would go, but the Twizy's open design means you're not just watching the landscape pass. You're in it, catching the smell of the fields and feeling the air change as you move through different parts of the region.
The 39 km fixed route takes about 3 hours, but the pace is yours. You stop as long as you want at each castle or estate, walk the grounds (the estates are free to explore, the castle buildings themselves are private), and move on when you're ready. No guide narration happening in real time, no group waiting for stragglers: the audio guide plays when you stop, and you control when that happens. The Twizy handles like a regular car on country roads, so if you've held a driver's license for at least three years and are 21 or older, the driving itself is straightforward.
The tour is accessible from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Leiden, Den Haag and Schiphol Airport by car or public transport. You'll need to bring your passport or ID and driver's license. If you're not from Europe, North America, South America or Australia, an international driver's license is required if yours isn't in English. A €150 deposit per vehicle is charged in advance (refundable), and there's a €500 own-risk amount per vehicle. All-risk insurance covering passengers and third-party liability is included.

Top questions
What castles and estates do I actually get to see on this route?
The route includes stops at a medieval castle, a 17th-century castle, and an 18th-century estate, plus the grounds surrounding Keukenhof (the castle itself is private, but the estate is open to walk). You also drive through the flower bulb region, which is part of the landscape rather than a formal stop.
Can I take someone with me in the Twizy, or do I drive alone?
The Renault Twizy seats two people, so you can bring one passenger. If you're booking for four or more travelers, you can reserve multiple vehicles: the options range from one Twizy for two people up to four vehicles for eight people.
What languages is the audio guide available in?
The audio guide comes in English, German, and Dutch. GPS navigation is also available in English and German.
Do I need a special license to drive a Renault Twizy?
No special license is required. You need to be at least 21 years old and have held a valid driver's license for at least three years. If your license isn't in English and you're from outside Europe, North America, South America or Australia, bring an international driver's license as well.
How much of the route is on country roads versus highways?
The Twizy is mainly driven on country roads, which is where the route takes you through the flower bulb region and past the castles. You won't be on highways.
