Leiden Photography Workshop: Capture Light and Composition
You apply each technique the moment you learn it, not hours later in a classroom.
Capture Leiden is a photography workshop where you learn light, composition, framing and visual storytelling by photographing the city's canals, windmills and historic architecture in real time. Small groups mean individual feedback on your work. Any phone or camera is welcome. The workshop runs 2.5 hours with a live English-speaking guide, and children from age 10 can join.

The experience
The workshop starts at De Valk windmill, where you practice perspective and negative space using its distinctive shape as your subject. From there you move through ten stops across Leiden: the 1600s city gate, the Rapenburg canal's reflections, Leiden University's botanical garden entrance, the narrow brick lanes of Pieterskwartier, the Visbrug and City Hall where boats and street life converge, the covered grain bridge where you work on timing and anticipation, and Burcht hill's medieval wall circuit. Each stop teaches one skill: how light changes across water, how to isolate architectural details, how to balance a busy scene into clarity, how to use foreground and layers to create depth. You shoot immediately after the instruction, so the lesson sticks.
The guide speaks English and works with groups small enough to give feedback on individual frames. You bring whatever camera you have (phone, compact, DSLR, mirrorless), and the coaching applies to all of them. Bottled water is included. The pace is relaxed, and the workshop suits all fitness levels. Wheelchair accessibility is available, and children from age 10 are welcome.
The route stays outdoors and does not enter ticketed sites like the windmill museum, botanical garden or churches, so the focus stays on the photography itself. You finish around City Hall and the grain bridge, having applied the workshop's lessons to real scenes you chose and composed yourself.
