The experience

You start at the guide's house near Amsterdam, where you can leave your belongings before pushing off into Waterland. The canoe holds two people, so you'll paddle with one other traveler or a companion you bring. From there, the route cuts into a nature reserve that has no road access. The only way in is by water. The landscape opens into meadowland dotted with wildflowers and the distinctive painted houses of old Waterland villages, the kind you won't see from the city streets.

Halfway through the two-hour paddle, you pull the canoe ashore for a drink and a moment to listen to the sounds around you without moving. The guide speaks English or Dutch and keeps groups small, never more than ten paddlers with one guide, so the reserve stays quiet. You're welcome to bring your own lunch and eat it in the owner's garden when you return.

The canoe itself is a Canadian style, stable and manageable even if you've never paddled before. You get a lifejacket and a waterproof bag to keep your phone and keys dry. The whole outing sits inside a morning or an afternoon, making it easy to fit around the rest of a city day.

What’s included

  • Canadian canoe for two.
