The Experience

“You know what’s funny?” our driver said, twisting around in his seat as we loaded into the van outside Amsterdam. “Most Dutch people have never even been to Kasteel de Haar.” He grinned like he was letting us in on a secret. I liked that — it felt less like a tour and more like tagging along with someone who actually cared about this place. The drive was just under an hour, but I barely noticed because our guide kept tossing out little facts about Utrecht and Dutch castles (and also pointed out a windmill that looked straight out of a painting — I think I took five blurry photos).

The castle itself… well, you see it first through these tall trees, all green and damp-smelling after the rain. There’s this hush when you walk up, except for birds somewhere in the branches. Inside, our guide told stories about the Van Zuylen family — some of them honestly wild (apparently there were parties here that made the newspapers). We climbed narrow stairs that creaked underfoot — not great if you’re tall or clumsy, which I am — and peeked into rooms with velvet chairs and gold things everywhere. The air smelled faintly of old wood and something floral from the gardens drifting in through open windows.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much during lunch at the little restaurant by the park. Our group swapped stories about getting lost in Amsterdam trams (I’m not alone!) while sipping coffee that tasted stronger than anything back home. Walking through the gardens after, everything felt extra bright — maybe it was just relief after all those stairs. When we finally piled back into the van for Amsterdam, my shoes were muddy but I couldn’t stop thinking about those red-brick towers against the gray sky. It’s weird how quickly three hours can go by when you’re somewhere that feels so far from your usual life.
