The Experience

We were already snickering outside Amsterdam Central Station when our guide — I think he said his name was Koen — waved us over with a grin that promised trouble. “If you’re easily offended, you might wanna leave now,” he warned, but nobody budged. The air smelled like rain and something sweet from a bakery nearby. Koen dove right in, cursing about the city’s beginnings and pointing out where the first beer tapper set up shop back in 1606. We wandered through narrow streets older than most countries, Koen tossing out stories about what they’d dug up from the mud here (“mostly bones and broken dreams,” he joked). I tried to repeat one of the Dutch names; Koen laughed so hard he nearly dropped his umbrella. It’s weird how you can feel both like an insider and a total outsider on these tours.

The Rembrandt House Museum stop was less about art and more about all the “crazy stuff” Rembrandt apparently got up to (I won’t spoil it). By the time we hit the Bloemenmarkt, my cheeks hurt from laughing — or maybe cringing, not sure which.
