The Experience

“Wait, is that the Munttoren already?” I asked, squinting at my phone and then up at the crooked tower ahead. We’d only just started our Outside Escape game tour in Amsterdam’s city center, but somehow my sense of direction was already off: blame the canals, or maybe just the excitement of piecing together clues while dodging bikes. The air smelled faintly sweet from a waffle stand near Dam Square, and I could hear someone playing accordion somewhere behind us. Our little group (three friends, one slightly competitive cousin) was already arguing over who got to enter the next answer on the app.

I didn’t expect to get so caught up in the story. Something about Rembrandt’s missing painting and a thief hiding among these old canal houses. The puzzles weren’t too easy (one riddle about a statue stumped us for a good ten minutes), but there were hints if you needed them. At Bloemenmarkt, we stopped longer than we meant to because the flower stalls were so bright and messy and smelled like wet earth after rain. A local woman selling tulips gave us a knowing smile when she heard us debating whether “Munt” meant coin or mint (it’s coin, by the way, Li laughed when I tried to say it in Dutch).

The whole route was about 2.5 kilometers, not far, but we took our time crossing bridges and peeking into shop windows along De Bijenkorf. You can start whenever you want (we picked late morning), which felt pretty relaxed compared to most tours I’ve done. No guide hovering or rushing you along. Just your team, your phones, and whatever pace feels right. There’s something kind of freeing about that, especially in a city as busy as Amsterdam.

I still think about that moment on Dam Square when we finally solved the last clue. It wasn’t dramatic or anything, but we all cheered anyway. Maybe it was just being together outside, laughing at ourselves for missing obvious hints, or maybe it was seeing Amsterdam in this playful way that stuck with me more than any museum tour ever did.
