Taste what Dutch families actually eat, stop by stop through Alkmaar

A small-group food and walking tour through Alkmaar where you taste six authentic Dutch foods (from cheese and kibbeling to stroopwafels), while exploring the city's canals, windmill, cheese market and fish stalls with a local guide. The tour runs about two and a half hours and includes the stories and traditions behind every bite.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Alkmaar's landmarks and food

  • See Molen van Piet windmill
  • Admire Nassaubrug wooden bridge
  • Visit Grote Sint-Laurenskerk church
  • Discover Alkmaar Town Hall
  • Experience Waag and Cheese Market
  • Explore historic fish market

The experience

You start at Alkmaar's iconic Molen van Piet windmill and walk from there through the city's picturesque canals and bridges, stopping at six tasting stations along the way. The route takes you past the Nassaubrug wooden bridge, the Grote Sint-Laurenskerk church, the Town Hall, and the Waag: the building that houses the Dutch Cheese Museum and overlooks the famous Cheese Market Square. You'll also step into the historic fish market, where the 1755 stalls still stand. Between each stop, your guide shares the personal stories and cultural quirks that explain why Dutch families eat what they do and how those foods fit into everyday life.

At the six tasting stations (Bread & Spread, Cheese Please, Mayo Mayhem, Cod Almighty, Snack Attack and Sweet Surrender). You taste the foods Dutch people actually grow up eating. That means stroopwafels, but also kroket, bitterbal, speculaas, and the everyday cheese and kibbeling that show up on Dutch tables far more often than tourists expect. Your guide is an English speaker who moved to the Netherlands and can tell you why these foods matter and where to find the best versions after the tour ends.

The group stays small, capped at eight people, so the pace stays personal and you're not herded through stops. Vegetarian options are available if you arrange them in advance. The tour is not suitable for vegans or guests with coeliac disease, and severe food allergies may pose a risk due to cross-contamination at the tasting stations.
