The experience
Two hours is enough to move through Haarlem's core without rushing. Your guide meets you at the Grote Markt and walks you past the landmarks that built the city. The river Spaarne, which made Haarlem a trading hub; Teyler's Museum and the work of Peter Teyler; the Waag and the brewing tradition that once defined the place. You'll see the Amsterdamse Poort and learn about the siege of Haarlem and the 5th Crusade, then move through the Koepel and Molen De Adriaan, a mill that was reconstructed after it burned down.
The tour also covers the hofje concept (the almshouse courtyards that still dot the city), and the history of the Waalse Kerk. You'll spend time at the Corrie ten Boom house, where the story of a family who hid Jews during World War II unfolds. The walk ends back near where you started, on cobbled streets that haven't changed much in centuries.
