11-day Upper Mustang 4WD jeep tour from Pokhara: Lo-Manthang
Eleven days crossing the Himalayan high desert to a Tibetan-influenced kingdom most travelers never reach
An 11-day 4WD jeep tour from Pokhara through Upper Mustang, a restricted region in Nepal's Himalayas where Tibetan culture and landscape dominate. You fly to Jomsom, then drive across desert terrain, deep canyons and eroded ridges to Lo-Manthang, the regional capital, visiting monasteries, a museum and Choser Cave along the way. The itinerary includes all domestic flights, accommodation, meals, an English-speaking guide and airport transfers; the permit to enter Upper Mustang is valid for 10 days, which shapes the route's pace and structure.
The Experience
You arrive in Kathmandu and spend two days there—one for airport transfer and rest, one for a guided sightseeing tour of the city—before flying to Pokhara to spend an afternoon at the lakeside. The real journey begins on day four when you fly from Pokhara to Jomsom and climb into a 4WD jeep for the drive up to Chusang, passing through Kagbeni and Muktinath at 2,900 meters. From there the route pushes deeper into Mustang: each day brings four to five hours of driving across landscape that shifts from high-altitude desert to barren ridges and deep canyons carved by wind and water.
By day six you reach Lo-Manthang, the capital of the Mustang region and the highest point of the tour. The next two days are spent exploring on foot and by jeep—visiting three different monasteries, a local museum and the town's market on day seven, then driving an hour to Choser Cave and back on day eight before returning to lower elevations. The descent takes two days: a drive to Ghami, then to Jomsom, where you catch a flight back to Pokhara and onward to Kathmandu. A cultural farewell dinner is included on your final evening before the airport transfer on day eleven.
An English-speaking guide travels with you throughout, handling logistics and context. The operator provides sleeping bags and down jackets (refundable) for the high-altitude nights, and all meals—breakfast, lunch and dinner—are included during the Mustang portion of the trip. Accommodation ranges from hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara to guesthouses in the mountain towns. The 4WD jeep is private to your group from Jomsom onward, and all domestic flights between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Jomsom are covered.

Is this one for you?Eleven days is long enough to reach Lo-Manthang and spend time exploring the monasteries and cave sites without rushing, but short enough to fit a single trip into a longer Nepal itinerary—if you have only a week, this tour won't work, and if you want to linger in Kathmandu or Pokhara, the fixed schedule leaves little room.

What's the actual driving like on the roads to Lo-Manthang?
The route crosses desert-like terrain, barren ridges, deep canyons and eroded cliffs—not paved highways. Daily driving stretches four to five hours, and the landscape is stark and high-altitude; the road itself is rough but passable by 4WD jeep, which is why the tour uses one.
Do I need a special permit to enter Upper Mustang?
Yes. Upper Mustang is a restricted area and the permit is issued for 10 days, which is why this tour is structured as an 11-day journey—the extra days cover your time in Kathmandu and Pokhara before and after the restricted zone.
What happens if the flight from Pokhara to Jomsom gets cancelled?
Bad weather, mainly wind, can delay or cancel flights between Pokhara and Jomsom. Any extra expenses caused by weather-related flight changes are not included and fall to the traveler; travel insurance for emergency situations is also not included and is your choice to purchase.
Are meals included for the whole 11 days?
Full board—breakfast, lunch and dinner—is included during the Mustang portion of the trip. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, only bed and breakfast are included at the hotels; lunch and dinner in those cities are your own expense, as are any bar drinks throughout the journey.
What kind of accommodation should I expect in the mountain towns?
The operator books the best available guesthouse accommodation in towns like Chusang, Tsarang, Ghami and Lo-Manthang. These are simple mountain lodges with basic facilities; you'll have a bed and access to meals, but amenities are minimal at high altitude.
Is this tour physically demanding?
The operator states you should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. Most days involve sitting in a jeep, but some days include short walks—such as the hour-long drive to Choser Cave and back, and exploration on foot in Lo-Manthang and the monasteries. The altitude (up to 3,500 meters) is the main physical factor.
