The experience

You meet your guide at the parking lot across from Flamingo Villa Boutique Hotel, where the lagoon spreads out in front of you. The flamingos are there year-round, and your guide explains what you're watching before you climb into the 4x4. From there, the drive heads south to the Pink Lake at the Salt Pans: the water's color shifts with the salt content and the light, and it's worth the stop on the way out to Sandwich Harbour.

The real drive is the one that follows: 4x4 across the dunes and along the coast toward the point where the sand meets the Atlantic. This is where you might see desert wildlife: the terrain supports springbok, gemsbok, oryx, jackals, ostriches, and if you're lucky, the Namib Desert Gecko. Halfway through, your guide stops and brings out snacks, drinks and a glass of champagne. You watch the light change over the water and the dunes while you eat.

Sandwich Harbour itself is the convergence point: dunes on one side, ocean on the other, and the sun dropping into it. You're there for the sunset, then the drive back to Walvis Bay follows the same route in the fading light. The whole tour runs 4.5 hours from start to finish.
