The experience
The day starts early: pickup from your Yangon hotel at 5:30 AM for the 110-mile drive to Kin Pun base camp, the staging point for Golden Rock. The road takes about four hours. Once you arrive, you board an open truck for the climb to the mountain pagoda. This is the adventure part, and it is the only way up. The Golden Rock itself is a massive boulder completely covered in gold leaf, balanced on a cliff edge in a way that seems to defy physics. You reach the top, visit the pagoda, and have time to photograph the rock and the surrounding views before heading back down.
Lunch happens at a local restaurant on the return route. After eating, the tour swings through Bago, a town about an hour from Yangon that holds several major Buddhist sites. The Shwemawdaw Pagoda rises over a thousand years old, its spire taller than Yangon's Shwedagon. Nearby stands the Shwethalyaung Reclining Buddha, a 55-meter-long image carved from stone and considered one of Myanmar's most revered objects. A brief stop at Kyaik Pun Pagoda shows four colossal Buddha figures facing the cardinal directions. If time allows, the tour includes the Taukkyan War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. You return to your hotel in the late evening.
An English-speaking guide travels with you throughout, and the vehicle is air-conditioned for the long stretches between sites. The tour runs 12 hours total. Wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees at the pagodas, and remove your shoes before entering the shrine areas. Book at least 14 days ahead, as the operator must obtain permission from the Ministry of Hotel and Tourism. The tour does not run during the Water Festival in mid-April or during monsoon season from June through September, when road conditions make travel unsafe.
